Exposed aggregate driveway leading up to a Perth home

If you are pricing up a new driveway in Perth, exposed aggregate is probably on your shortlist. It looks better than a plain grey slab, it holds up to WA’s sun and it does not go slippery the way some smooth finishes do. This guide walks through what an exposed aggregate driveway actually costs in Perth in 2026, what pushes the price up or down, and how it stacks up against plain concrete.

Perth market guide pricing

As a rough guide across Perth’s metro area, homeowners are looking at:

  • Plain concrete driveway: around $70 to $90 per square metre
  • Exposed aggregate driveway: around $100 to $150 per square metre

These are market guide ranges, not a quote. Every driveway is different, and the only way to get an accurate number is a measure and quote on your actual site. CJH Concrete offers a free measure and quote across Perth’s northern corridor (Merriwa, Kinross, Quinns Rocks, Padbury, Joondalup) and metro-wide, so you are never guessing.

For a typical single-car driveway of around 40 square metres, that puts exposed aggregate somewhere in the $4,000 to $6,000 range before extras like colour upgrades, drainage work or demolition of an old driveway. A double driveway around 60 to 80 square metres scales up from there.

What actually moves the price

The per-square-metre range exists because no two driveways are the same. Here is what shifts a job toward the top or bottom of that range.

Site access and prep

If a concrete truck can back straight up to the pour site, labour is straightforward. Narrow side access, steep blocks or driveways that need a pump to reach the pour area all add cost. Perth’s sandy soils generally compact well, but if the base needs extra excavation or imported fill to get a stable, level pad, that adds to the job too.

Removing an old driveway

Demolition and removal of an existing concrete or paved driveway is priced separately from the new pour. Bin hire, breaking up old slab and hauling it away all add to the total, so factor this in if you are replacing rather than pouring fresh.

Aggregate blend and coverage

Standard Geostone blends sit within the exposed aggregate range above. Specialty blends, larger stone sizes or a heavier concentration of feature aggregate can push toward the top of the range. This is one to talk through when you are choosing a finish, not something to guess at from a brochure.

Falls, drainage and edging

Driveways need correct fall to shed water away from the garage and house. Getting that right, plus any additional drainage points, edging details or a border in a contrasting finish, all add labour and materials on top of the base rate.

Reinforcement and thickness

A standard residential driveway is reinforced with steel mesh and poured to a thickness that handles day-to-day vehicle loads. If your driveway needs to handle a boat, caravan or heavier vehicle regularly, a thicker slab and different reinforcement changes the cost.

Exposed aggregate vs plain concrete: is it worth the extra?

Plain concrete is cheaper up front and does the job for a lot of driveways. But exposed aggregate earns its higher price in a few ways that matter in Perth specifically:

Kerb appeal. A plain grey slab is functional. Exposed aggregate, especially a blend like Jacaranda, gives a driveway texture and depth that lifts the whole front of the house.

Grip underfoot and under tyre. The exposed stone surface has more texture than a steel-trowelled plain finish, which helps in wet weather.

Heat. Perth summers are long and exposed aggregate tends to show less glare than a smooth pale slab, though colour choice matters more than finish type here.

Resale. Driveways are one of the first things a buyer sees. An exposed aggregate driveway in good condition reads as a cared-for property.

If budget is the main driver and the driveway is out of sight or a rental, plain concrete is a reasonable call. If it is the front of your own home, the extra $30 to $60 per square metre is usually worth it over the life of the driveway.

Common cost mistakes to avoid

A few things trip people up when they are budgeting for a new driveway, and knowing about them upfront saves a headache later.

Comparing quotes on price alone. Two quotes that look similar per square metre can cover very different scopes. One might include base preparation, edging and a sealer, while another only covers the concrete pour itself. Always ask exactly what is included before comparing numbers side by side.

Forgetting about access for future work. If you are planning other works, like a new fence, landscaping or an extension, it is worth sequencing the driveway pour after anything that needs heavy machinery or truck access across the same area. Pouring first and then bringing in a bobcat or crane later risks damaging a brand new surface.

Underestimating drainage. A driveway that looks fine on a dry day can become a problem in Perth’s wetter months if fall and drainage were not planned properly. It is far cheaper to get this right during the pour than to retrofit drainage afterwards.

Skipping the base prep to save money. Corners cut on excavation and compaction rarely show up immediately. They show up as cracking, settling or an uneven surface a year or two down the track, at which point the fix costs more than doing it properly the first time would have.

How CJH Concrete prices a driveway

Every quote starts with an on-site measure, not a phone estimate. We look at the actual area, check access for the truck and any pump requirements, assess the existing ground and any old surface that needs removing, and talk through the aggregate blend and finish you want. That gives you one clear number rather than a range with hidden extras waiting to surface once the job starts.

We also factor in realistic timing from the outset, including whether you need the work done urgently or over a weekend to fit around other trades or a settlement date. Being upfront about these factors before the pour avoids surprises on invoice day.

Getting an accurate quote

Online ranges are useful for budgeting, but the only way to know what your driveway costs is to have someone measure it. Site access, existing surface, fall requirements and the aggregate blend you want all factor into a real number.

CJH Concrete does free measures and quotes across Perth’s northern suburbs and metro-wide, including urgent and weekend pours when you need the job done to a deadline.
